Lena Cheung, MISM
Pianist-Producer, Director of Lenamusic&Co.
Born in British Hong Kong, raised in a multicultural environment. Lena’s music sense was already noticeable when she was still a toddler, she started learning piano as an after-school activity when she was around 6.
Since her early development in piano playing, she was often being compared to professional pianists and was expected to perform like them. On the basis of organic growth, Lena still managed to triumph numerous music competitions with her performances.
In 2004, she won 2 prizes in the 56th Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association(HKSMSA) Music Festival and was awarded the Winner of Sonatina by the lated David Price OBE. Her distinct delicate playing style was well recognised and always mentioned by well-respected concert pianists then adjudicators. As a child pianist, her mature sympathetic approach and non-abrupt dynamics/expressions usage have successfully caught the heart of the audience.
In 2006, she received a great commendation by the lated Dr. David Brock, who was a noted authority of Hummel, a pupil of Mozart, for her interpretation of Mozart’s Sonata. He remarked that “This was played at a true allegro tempo, but take care that this does not cause rhythmic inaccuracy or unevenness. There was much to admire in this playing, not least the well-controlled fingerwork in the expansion. Take care that the dynamics and expression marks are used to maximum effect.”
Despite achieving a level of success at a young age, the young pianist decided to completely retired from piano at the age of 15.
In 2022, the pianist’s long term health condition suddenly deteriorated in an unexplained way, mysteriously lost her hearing, later developed into a state of physical frailty. Nevertheless, this did not stop her from returning to the piano after such a long break. Prior to conservatoire life, those strict classical training she received during her childhood enabling her to work through all the collaborative projects with other music professionals and organisations.
In 2024, her recordings were premiered in The 38th Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts(HKAPA) Electronic and Chamber Music Composition Concert. Her down-to-earth approach to music inspire many and was invited by Final Fantasy ONLY :Ballade as their Lead Music Producer, brightened up music from other genres with a touch of classical vibe.
Outside of performing arts, she works with medical professionals for their researches regarding life-changing neurological condition and music psychology.
