Learn More about the original work:
The melody that starts the piece came to Park when he was in high school. He was in the middle of an emotional depression, which affected his schoolwork and social relationships. There were periods of weeks when he could not pick up his saxophone to practice, and his music teacher would be shocked as he has always been a diligent musician. The one thing that Park had never lost though was his love for music. The melodious “E-A-D” sets the tone for the rest of the piece, reminding him that all conflicts resolve somehow. But in the meantime, the internal turmoil would continue, as can be felt in the third measure where he play F# over G (maj7th chord). The dissonance was acknowledgement of the tears he felt yet could not express.
The title of the song reflects the ongoing melody that loop over and over like circular waves of the river. In the second half of the piece at the key change, he wanted to communicate triumphant hope. The D that served as the base of the home chord has now become the major third note of the new key of Bb, implying that the seemingly constant nature of today’s world may suddenly end up being completely transformed in the future.
Timothy Park – Flowing River (Arr. by Lena Cheung)
November, 2024
Theme: Given the original K-Drama theme song format, and to emphasise the mixed feeling behind this piece e.g. lonely, pondering about identity, life…et cetera, Lena purposely inserted a mid-section(B), simulated the sound of water flow with hints of undercurrent and transcendence, turning it into a piece which sounds “more complete” and wholesome. It is sad that she cannot play this arrangement for Lenamusic&Co. at this moment due to a complicated condition, but she noted that when a correct fingerwork/touching is being applied, this will definitely sound much more deeper and emotional.

Fryderyk Chopin – Życzenie (Arr. for Flute and Piano by Lena Cheung)

Considered it as a song, extra measure was being taken for this arrangement to preserve the characteristics of human voices. Transcript directly from vocal with all the syllables details, Flute was being chosen as the best instrument to recreate the bird-like soprano voice.
To emphasis the mid section’s Mazurka form, Lena applied her own Mazurka style on the piano part to take it to the next level.
A work full of wishful happiness which the theme is opened to the audience’s interpretation.
